Have you ever considered that you may be living in a mental construct that work is meant to be hard and not a place of happiness? Maybe your construct says, “I don’t come to work for pleasure, its a means of getting a paycheque” maybe it says, “no one is happy at work but we all have to do it to make a living” or better yet, maybe it says, “I may not love my work but the thought of changing is even more painful so live with the devil that I know”. Regardless of the mental construct that you have built in your head, I am here to tell you that happier workplaces are possible where each person does meaningful and purposeful work while maintaining grace and ease. Therefore coming home happier and better contributors to the community. So, lets consider some ways in which you can break down the mental construct that may be keeping you from waking up each morning and thinking, YEH, I am going to work!
- Acceptance– First step is to accept the fact that you are not happy at work and be authentic with yourself about you feel. Sometimes acceptance is the hardest step because it means that you now have to deal with doing something about it and the consequences may seem painful or difficult. If you are unhappy and not in acceptance you will find ways to be toxic such as, gossiping, undermining the strategy or even being passive aggressive towards your leadership, colleagues or client. You may not see your own unhappiness but believe me when I tell you, others around you know it and can feel it! If you truly want to be in a place of acceptance, say it out loud, share it with a friend or write it down in a journal, a simple statement such as, I am not happy in my workplace because _______________________________
- Surrender– Second step is to surrender to your pure magnificence and brilliance in the world. You are among 7 billion people with your combination of experience, education and life lessons that you bring to the world. No one else is like YOU! Once you surrender into fully understanding that you are here as a contributor to project earth, there is a sense of knowing that you can create impact. Open yourself up to the unlimited possibilities that you can create for yourself. Once we start to limit ourselves, we lose the essence of what is even possible. Surrender to an expiry date, if you knew the exact date you were going to die, is this the way you spend your day? I know this may sound morbid but unless your really accept that you will die one day, you can’t live to come ALIVE. The greatest question I would ask- Are you worth being happy where you spend the majority of your day? If your answer is YES, which I hope it is, then know you create your own reality so get out of your own way and make it happen.
- Action– Third step is to reach out to your support system and make an ask of them to support your new journey. Making an ask is not easy for most people because we sometimes perceive it as a place of weakness. Most people are ready to help but just don’t know how so be open to having conversations with various people to gain insight. Do some research internally in your workplace, maybe you are better suited for a different role that is available. Maybe this research will yield that is a gap in the organization that you may have the skills to fill. Be proactive about what you truly desire and then find ways to go out and get it. Make a workplace desires list about what kinds of things give you the greatest joy and where you see yourself having the greatest impact.
Above all, when you look in the mirror do you love what you see, do you love what you do, do you love who you have become and do you love how your job makes you feel? If not, then its time to do something about it because much like everyone else, you also come with an expiry date and when its time to face death, you would want to say that you had lived a fulfilled joyous life because that is what your magnificence deserves.
